1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Welcome to our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program! This free nationwide program is designed to encourage you to read 1000 books to your preschooler before he/she enters kindergarten. Reading aloud to children, beginning in infancy, stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. Reading to your child also provides the building blocks they need to become lifelong readers and learners. The more children read, the better they become at reading. Not only that, but reading together is fun!

Who may participate?

The program is open to all preschoolers who have not yet begun kindergarten (ages 0-6)

How does the program work?

Register: Stop by Delta Public Library to register. You may pick up reading logs at the circulation desk, along with a goody bag of incentives.

Track your reading: Every time you read a book with your preschooler, color in a shape on the reading log. Bring their "100 book" completed reading log to the circulation desk and get a picture taken to display in our library. They will also receive a special prize for every 100 books read. You may also track your books on the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten App from the app store. If you are tracking your reading through this app, just show us progress from your mobile device.

What books count?

All books read to your child count, including:

  • Books you have read over and over (repetition is good) You may color a shape every time it is read.
  • Books read at library storytimes
  • Books read at preschool or daycare
  • Books read by an older sibling
  • Early Literacy Summer Reading Program through our library
  • Online Stories
  • Books from library, home, dr. office waiting room, etc.

1000 books? Is it even possible?

While it's best for parents to join the program just after the child is born, our library is allowing preschoolers to join any time before the child enters kindergarten. Even if your child does not reach the 1000 book goal before kindergarten, any reading they do is beneficial. Besides that, just think of all the cool prizes they will receive along the wayl

A good thing for parents to think about is this: If they read only one book at bedtime every night for 3 years, they will have read 1095 books. If they read 3 books a day, they'll read 1095 books in 1 year! This is TOTALLY POSSIBLE!!
